Dirk Nowitzki is off the absolute chain. His game speaks volumes for how much he has improved since he has been in the league. Who would have ever thought on draft day in 1998 that the German assasin would become unguardable later in his career? Because that is exactly what he is right now, unguardable. I hear people say that James Posey will slow him down and so will the other players that the Heat throw at him, along with the multiple looks they are going to throw at him. Guess what….nah, that ain’t gonna do a damn thing. The biggest critcism of Nowitzki was that he couldn’t play when small, pesky guards defended him (ala Bruce Bowen), and prior to this year, the statistics verified that. Now, let’s fast forward to this year. He has figured out the whole smaller-man-gaurding-me thing. He averaged 27 ppg and 13 rpg against the Spurs in the playoffs this year, against the premier perimeter defender in the league in Bruce Bowen. Not only that, he made BIG shots at HUGE moments to lead his team to the NBA Finals. I mean, like Outkast says, I was figuratively on “his testicles and nutsack” ever since he got drafted. I knew he was gonna be the truth, that went without question, but never did I imagine that he would be THIS good. And when I say THIS good, I mean like “carry-my-team-on-my-shoulders and kryptonite-don’t-phase-me” kind of good. And he’s doing it in the playoffs, increasing all his stats across the board throughout the playoffs. He’s taken all the criticism over the years and redeveloped his game. Now, he will grind it out against you, he will post you up, shoot over you, dribble around you, or throw it down in your face. He just doesn’t get rattled anymore offensively, and he’s ONLY 27 years old. Now, on to the more pressing matter, will the Mavs win the Finals? Hmmmm….that’s a tough one, two entertaining and talented teams who both have persevered throughout the years. I gotta go with the Mavs though in 7, although my pick is shaky and I wouldn’t at all be surprised if the Heat hoist the trophy at the end of the day, but I do think the Mavs will take care of business and they will just be too quick and too deep for the Miami Heat.
